What is a Condom?

A condom is a device that creates a barrier between bodies to prevent pregnancy and the spread of disease. They’re inexpensive, disposable, and easy to use. When used properly, male condoms can be about 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. Female condoms, also called internal condoms, can be 95% effective when used properly. Both male and female condoms are intended for single use, and should be removed and discarded after sex.

Male Condoms: This type of condom fits snugly over the penis and there are many different styles to choose from, including different sizes, lubricated or non-lubricated, and even novelty condoms.Β

Female/Internal Condoms: The internal condom is tucked inside the vagina or anus to create an internal barrier during sex. It comes pre-lubricated with a silicone-based lubricant. It has a soft, flexible inner ring that holds the closed end of the condom in place, and another ring that remains outside of the vagina or anus. While there is a wide array of options for male condoms, there are fewer options for internal condoms, with only one FDA-approved device available in the US, the FC2 condom, which is made of nitrile, a durable and latex-free material. One advantage is that it can be inserted up to 2 hours before intimacy.

One important thing to note is that couples should not use a male and female condom simultaneously, as it can make one or both of the condoms slip out of place or break. If you’re shopping for the best condoms for feeling and protection, here are some more factors to consider:

Condom Materials

Latex: The most common type of condom, and a reliable choice. Latex is non-porous. Be sure to avoid oil-based lubes with latex condoms, as they can make latex less effective. Some people may have a latex allergy, in which case they should avoid latex and explore other options below.

Polyurethane: This material is strong and durable. It’s thinner than latex, which might increase sensitivity. Polyurethane condoms are also looser, which may feel more comfortable to some people, but can also present greater risk of friction, breakage, or slipping off. Use extra lube!

Lambskin: Made from the lining of animal intestines. This natural material may increase sensitivity during sex, but it’s quite porous. Lambskin may not protect against STIs or pregnancy as well as other materials.

Nitrile: Commonly used in female condoms, nitrile is a synthetic rubber. It does not contain latex, making it suitable for people with latex allergies. It is also compatible with oil-based and water-based lubricants.

How to Pick the Right Size Male Condom

While female condoms come in just one size, male condoms come in a range of sizes, and should fit snugly and securely on the penis. Size is determined by the diameter of the opening, known as the nominal width. Unless you have an unusually long penis, most condoms stretch to accommodate any length. To find the right size, you may want to measure the girth of your erect penis with a measuring tape. To calculate nominal width, divide the girth by 3.14 and convert to millimeters. Here is a helpful size chart to consider:

Lubricated Versus Non-lubricated

Internal condoms come lubricated, while male condoms are available in lubricated and non-lubricated styles.

Lubricated: Some latex condoms have lube built right in, which can reduce friction, increase pleasure and also help prevent the condom from tearing or breaking. The plus side is that you don’t have to worry about supplying your own lube. However, some people may have sensitivities to pre-lubricated condoms.

Non-lubricated: Non-lubricated condoms do not have pre-added lubricant. The absence of pre-added lubricant allows you to choose and apply the type of lubricant you prefer for a more personalized experience. Make sure to choose a lube that’s compatible with the condom material.

Thickness/Texture

Thickness: Some people may prefer β€œthin” or β€œultra-thin” condoms for providing a barrier but not totally reducing sensation. It’s important to note that thinner material does not necessarily mean they’re more likely to break.

Texture: For extra pleasure and sensation during sex, you can try condoms textured with tiny ribs, dots, or intricate textures.

Novelty Condoms

Novelty condoms offer a unique take on the classic protective device. While they add fun to the bedroom, they sometimes prioritize whimsy over functionality. It’s important to choose novelty condoms from quality brands that strike a balance between protection and play.

Flavored: Tantalize the tastebuds and enhance oral sex with condoms that taste like strawberries, chocolate, mint, or other flavors.Β

Tingling: Tingling condoms come with a stimulating lubricant that introduces a gentle tingling sensation that can heighten sensitivity and intensify pleasure during sex.

Glow-in-the-dark: A novelty device like a glow-in-the-dark condom can light up the night with extra excitement and intrigue, putting a spotlight on your favorite body part.
