Personal Lubricants: Lube Up For More Pleasure

Slip into something a little more comfortable with lube! Applying personal lubricant decreases friction and increases pleasure and comfort during sex. Not only does it amplify your experience, it can help protect sensitive tissue from chafing and tearing. Explore the best personal lubricants today!

When to Use Lube

Lube can improve almost every sexual situation. Use it with a partner, by yourself, or with toys! Some people don’t naturally produce enough lubrication for comfort during sex; while others produce plenty of natural lubricant but enjoy the sensation of extra lube. Whether you’re into vaginal or anal sex, lube is here to help!

Live your best pleasure-filled life by applying lube whenever it feels right for you and your partner. But before you dive in, it’s important to know that there are several different types of lube, each with different qualities, so you can choose the one that works best for your needs.

Types of Personal Lubricant

Water-based Lube

Water-based personal lubricants use water as their base ingredient. They are one of the most widely-used types of lube due to their versatility and gentle nature. Water-based lube is generally safe to use with silicone sex toys and both latex and nonlatex condoms. Plus, it’s gentle on sensitive skin, and easily washes away, so it won’t stain your expensive sheets.

One potential drawback is that it doesn’t last as long as other types of lube, meaning you may need to keep it handy and reapply during a longer session.

Silicone Lubricant

Those with very sensitive skin might want to explore silicone-based lube. It’s hypoallergenic, so it works nicely for most people. Plus, it’s long-lasting, so if you don’t relish taking a break to reapply (we don’t blame you), a silicone-based product might be a good choice for you. Silicone-based lubes are also generally safe to use with condoms.

One very important factor is that silicone-based lubes can deteriorate silicone toys, abrading the surface of toys and creating places where bacteria can grow, which makes them less sanitary. So, if playing with silicone toys is part of your personal routine or if you share toys with a partner, make sure to use a water-based lubricant (see above) to ensure safety.

Oil-based Lubricants

If that romantic back rub tends to turn into something more stimulating, then oil-based lube will be your new best friend. It can do double-duty, moonlighting as massage oil, and is known to be incredibly long-lasting, making it perfect for marathon sessions.

The downside? Oil-based lubes are not recommended for use with latex condoms, since they can increase the risk of rips and tears. Plus, they might stain sheets and clothing. Sometimes Vaseline or petroleum jelly get lumped in with oil-based lube. While these can work in a pinch, they have some major drawbacks. According to some studies, they may be associated with a higher incidence of bacterial vaginosis and candida-related yeast infections.

Natural Lubes

Natural lubes are becoming more prevalent, basically meaning lubes with an ingredient list that is both short and natural, featuring ingredients like aloe, alfalfa, safflower oil, etc. Natural lubes are typically vegan, paraben-free and pH balanced.

Some people may turn to household oils, like coconut oil, olive oil, peanut oil, and aloe vera; however, coconut oil can stain your sheets and increase the risk of condom breakage (since oils break down the effectiveness of latex); and olive oil, peanut oil, and aloe vera can increase the risk of yeast infections. Baby oil is not recommended. Instead of using household oils, look for a product in our collection that is specifically designed for sex and uses natural ingredients.

Flavored Lube

For a multi-dimensional sensory experience, some folks have a taste for flavored lube, but there is some concern around flavored products being linked to higher risk of infection. It’s important to evaluate the quality of every lube product, including flavored lube. We recommend avoiding flavored lubes with ingredients like sugar, parabens, and glycerin; while looking for products that are pH-balanced, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and created for both intimate and oral use.
